Art show and auction to benefit teen HIV education
by Linda Brunk
Akron-On December 6, community artists will gather for a fundraiser at Love 2 Dance Studio in Fairlawn to benefit the Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio's HIV/AIDS awareness and education for. teens.
Between the months of January and June 2008, there were 17 new cases of HIV reported in people 19 years and up in Stark County alone. And the Ohio Department of Health's most current statistics report 198 new diagnoses in Cuyahoga County and 30 for Summit County. When considering this, it is realistic to think that there are teenagers in our community that are not aware that they are positive.
Andrea Love, owner, director and choreographer of Love 2 Dance Studio, felt the need to do something to help raise aware-
ness.
"As a community, we need to pull together to make sure that our teenagers have the proper resources and education in order to put an end to this. Simply enough, our children of today are the leaders of tomorrow," she said.
This is why she has teamed up with the local organization Penny's From Heaven. Each year Penny's from Heaven creates a
charity event to raise money for women and children with long-term illnesses. The events are held in memory of Penny Cozy BrunkWilson, aunt to Andrea of Love 2 Dance Studio, and sister to the founder Linda L.Brunk, R.N., CPN.
Between January and
June, there were 17 new cases of HIV reported in people 19 years and up
in Stark County alone.
Penny died suddenly when she was 46 years old. One day she woke up and the next minute she was gone. Each time Penny's from Heaven gives back to those in need, it is a reminder of that dear aunt and sister. The fourth annual Penny's from Heaven benefit, A^3-Art-AIDS-Awareness, will be
held Saturday, December 6 from 6 to 9 pm at Love 2 Dance Studio, 2872 West Market Street, in Fairlawn.
The benefit will feature a silent auction and an art show exhibiting and selling the work of local artists. They will also collaborate with fellow local artist Alex Natko, who will create and donate a 10-foot handmade Christmas tree decorated with tin boxes to be filled with the other artists' creations.. Each tin box will be sold for $25 during the evening.
Also included in the benefit will be children's expressions of "What Love Is?" In the spirit of community, children are invited to take part by submitting work in any medium that expresses "what love is" to them. Their work will be on display as part of the art show, and a local art director will
judge and award prizes. The top five child artists chosen will have their art work sold as part of the benefit.
There is a requested donation of $10 at the door for adults, $5 for children, and free for under 5. The evening promises a casual environment with appetizers generously donated by the VegiTerranean of Akron, and hand-dipped chocolates from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory of Mentor, as well a cash donation wine bar.
